I boarded La Grave in 91.. The second year they opened it for the ski season.. A room, packed lunch and guide was $37.. The guide was mandatory.. I could have possible been the first to snowboard La Grave.. Snowboarding was just starting to catch on in Europe in 91.. I had been boarding since 84 in Alberta, Canada..
I skied La Grave many years during the 90's and early 2000 when I did most of the classics, Pans de Rideaux, Chirouze , not to mention tree skiing on snowy days under the cable car. It leaves you with memories for your whole life. Unfortunately, it has become too crowded. I have now gone in search for the tiny forgotten ski resorts that dot the French, Swiss and Italian Alps, the ones that are out of the way, the places that you can only reach with touring equipment and several hours of hiking. You can get powder days when only you are making tracks and the magic of feeling isolated from the rest of humanity is still alive.
Same boat, Chamonix and la grave are so crowded I'll never go again. Skied these in the 80's 90's last time in 2010. So crowded with posers you couldn't get on the valley buses. So I go elsewhere.
LG wasn't that busy on middle of weeks on seasons 2014...2018 when I was around. On weekend bluebird mornings it was just better to chill out. I just went to that small pub opposite side of the road and had a coffee or a beer while and a snack while waiting the que to vanish.. which was about 10AM usually. Then I took a condola of my own without all the stressed people, started righ taway with Triffide 1 or 2 which were quite often not tracked at all. Skied the skiers right of Vallon to the Village. Took lift up... After P2 it was easy to observe if some group had allready followed my tracks to T1 and T2 and if the track to P2 had been opened... From P2 all the nice forrest runs are available after skiing the Triffides...
It is indeed one of the best freeride spots of the world in a fantastic atmosphere due to the wild environment and that local relaxed freeride community. I have been here a couple of times and skied already with the American guide Joe Vallone when he just arrived here in La Grave, a great guy!
Long live freedom: it’s your responsibility to stay safe and it’s their responsibility to rescue you caught in avalanches or other accidents. Why am I not surprised by the definition of freedom here described.
Great video, I love La Grave and can't wait to come back in March. Truly is a special place, My previous visit I got to experience the love and community of this wonderful place. A bientôt La Grave. Dan, Mammoth Lakes Ca
been skiing the classic since i was late teens and now doing those lines its an amazing place and the mountain is always in charge. Even the line they do in this is amazing
Ce site est tout simplement magique. Il suffit d’aller y skier une fois pour être Addict. Merci pour ces runs splendides At LA GRAVE people think ski, dream ski, talk about ski and ... ski with fun and freedom. 👍👍👍 Just the top of the top.
Excellent film. I have skied there a number of times on the easier routes. I have no rope skills so good to see some of what else is out there on the mountain. I have never seen those queues at the lift though. It must have been the first blue bird day after the snow has fallen and a weekend.
Since I heard of the place 20 years ago, I finally got to La Grave last year so to all who have never been........... add it to your bucket lists now !
Finally I waited for the video! You guys are the best when I want to grow up to you at the base of the cot and make skis. It is a pity that they know little about you in Russia. We are dark here)) And the winter we govshische !!! But I ride (on your skis) sometimes it turns out.
he only returns to earth a few times a year these days ever since the nordic gods of pleiades adopted him into their paradise world. in fact he was dropped onto earth in a basket as a baby

Doug Coombs I believe was the first American to openly pioneer La Grave! He paved the way! Hope you can give tribute to the ones that got you there! It’s not the sponsors it’s the people like Doug Coombs and Bill Brigs!
Rip my old friend and guide Damien Albert...your eternal laugh still echoes in my head

Holla, I lived and worked in Les 2 Alpes 82 to 92, and did La Grave, in snowboard in the middle 1980's several times, form the top ....

One path leads to paradise. One path leads to pain. One path leads to freedom. "May God keep us safe. Amen."
Juste Magnifique, que du bonheur !!!
I have been a few times in La Grave and it is still an unique freeride /alpine area which is even nicer if you ski with Guides like Joe Vallone.
Merci à vous d'aimer notre région
Je suis d'une autre époque :)
One word. Incredible.

I was there in the early 2000's when a local band member fell to their death in a crevasse, really sad time and you really felt it in the community.

I really appreciate the long camera views, made so right by higher rez capture. Great work.
quite pleasing to watch a ski movie for once and actually recognise the terrain, even if I didn't quite ski the same lines....

Brilliant that they got the lift lease renewed. Hope they'll still pull riders up behind the piste basher though :-) What a place.
